Saul Meets Samuel

Saul Meets Samuel

They went into the city and the maidens at the well told them that Samuel was going to bless a sacrifice that day on the high place,
so they went on to the high place and met Samuel on his way there.

The Lord had warned Samuel the day before that a Benjamite was coming to meet him, and that this was the man whom he should anoint king of Israel.
When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said: "Here is the man of whom I spoke, the one who shall reign over my people."

So Samuel spoke to Saul and told him to set his mind no longer upon the lost donkeys for they had been found.
He said: "To whom does Israel look?
Is it not to you and all your father's house?"

Saul said: "l am a Benjamite, a member of the smallest of all the tribes of Israel, and my family is the least important in the tribe of Benjamin.
Why do you speak to me in this manner?"

Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them into the parlour
and made them sit at the head of the table, above all the other guests,
of whom there were about thirty.
And Samuel told the cook to serve Saul with the special portion of meat which had been reserved for the guest of honour.
The next day Samuel took a vial of oil,
and poured it upon Saul's head and kissed him and said: "Is it not because the Lord has anointed you to be captain of his people?"

Saul went back to his own country, and the Spirit of God came upon him and he prophesied,so that those who knew him before were amazed and said: "What has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also one of the prophets?"
Saul told his family that he.had met a man of God who had told him that the lost donkeys were found, but, in telling them,
he made no mention of his anointing or of the kingdom.
