David Spares Sauls Life

David Spares Sauls Life

David arose one night and came to where Saul had set up his tent.
David saw the place where Saul lay,
and Abner, the son of Ner, the captain of his army, lay beside him.
Saul lay in the middle of the camp, and his men were encamped around him.
So David took the spear and the jug of water from beside Saul's pillow,
and stole away, and no man saw him or knew that he was there or waked up,
for they were all asleep.
A deep sleep from the Lord had fallen upon them.

Then David went and stood on the top of a hill far off,
a long distance from the camp.
David cried to the people, and to Abner, saying: "Are you not a courageous man?
Who is like you in Israel?
Why then have you not protected the lord your king?
For one of the people came to destroy the king your lord.
Look now for the king's spear and the jug of water that was beside his pillow."

Then Saul knew David's voice and said: "Is that your voice, my son David?"
And David said: "It is my voice, my lord, O king." And he added:
"Why does my lord pursue his servant this way? What have I done? What
is the evil within me?"

Then Saul said: "I have sinned.Return to me, my son David, for I will never more do you any harm, because my life was precious to you this day.
I see now that I have been foolish and very wrong."
Then Saul blessed David.
And David went on his way, and Saul returned to the palace.
